Presentation by LCG on NE Regional Library
LPL Board of Control Monthly Meeting
The June meeting of the LPL Board of Control was mainly focused on information regarding the design and build of the new NE Library, although LCG Chief Administrative Officer Rachel Godeaux also presented information on the loss of the millage election in May and LCG’s plans for placing it on the ballot once again in December.
Key takeaways regarding the millage:
- State law mandates a six-month waiting period before ballot initiatives can be put forward again, which means the library millage will most likely appear on the December 12, 2026 ballot.
- LCG plans to bundle at least 7–9 millages (library, public safety, corrections, police/fire salaries, public buildings, and possibly parks/rec & roads) on the December 2026 ballot.
- Board attorney Daniel Gautier confirmed that library board members can advocate for the passage of millage renewals, as long as public funds are not used for lobbying purposes.
- Public communication will be key to the millages’ passage, as well as partnerships with advocacy groups such as police and fire unions.
Board member Rena Bradley also acknowledged the needed board work to regain the public trust:
“…if we are aiming to turn over a new leaf and really get this out there, we need to acknowledge our own part in getting trust back to the public and making the library more than just the drama it has been in the past.”
Godeaux then turned the meeting over to architect Maureen Arndt and engineer Mia Ovcina, who made the following presentation:
Key highlights of the presentation:
- 113 parking spaces (including 6 accessible/senior spaces).
- Collection capacity of 44,000–53,000 volumes and 37 public computers.
- Dedicated children’s storytime activity room, fenced children’s/maker’s porch, outdoor music garden, walking paths, 50-to-100-seat amphitheater, high-tech makerspace, quiet reading room, multiple study rooms, and 24/7 automated pickup lockers alongside book returns.
- Sloped “butterfly” standing-seam metal roof designed for long-term durability and surface drainage.
- Structural steel superstructure built to withstand high wind loads.
